Why We Call It Understory
Beneath the canopy of the forest lies a rich, biodiverse layer of growth. Plants thrive in dappled sunlight, away from the harshness of the sun. Underground networks connect the trees, while shrubs, saplings and flowers fill the forest floor. Quiet. Understated. Complex. Resilient. Beautiful.
This is the understory, and we think it’s a perfect metaphor for queerness.
The understory is rooted in belonging. Because we all belong here, no matter who we are or how we identify. All we need is to show up with an open heart and mind.

What We’re Rooted In
Just as a tree has roots, a business must have a strong foundation. Here at Understory, ours is built upon four pillars, and everything we do must be tied back to them:
Culture
We honour queer history, celebrate queer joy, and embrace the beauty in diversity. Appreciation for where we’ve been, where we are, and where we’re going is sewn into the very fabric of our space.
Community
At a time when it’s easy to feel disconnected and alone, bringing people together in a safe and welcoming third space is in everything we do.
Comfort
Everyone deserves a place where they don’t have to explain or excuse themselves for being different. At Understory, we celebrate authenticity and aim to create a warm and relaxing environment where we all can be ourselves.
Creativity
Art is healing. From brand conception and design to cozy workshops and performances, we foster creative expression and inspiration.
